Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about custom orthotics, appointments, insurance coverage, bracing, compression stockings and what to expect when visiting The Foot Smith.

1. Do I need a prescription for custom orthotics?

A prescription is not necessarily required to book an assessment with The Foot Smith. However, some extended health insurance plans require a prescription from an eligible healthcare provider before they will reimburse the cost of custom orthotics. We recommend checking the requirements of your individual insurance plan before your appointment.

Many extended health benefit plans provide coverage for custom orthotics, although coverage limits and documentation requirements vary by insurer and policy. Some plans may require a prescription, biomechanical assessment, detailed invoice or other supporting documentation. We recommend contacting your insurer before your appointment to confirm your specific requirements.

The Foot Smith does not currently direct bill insurance providers. Payment is made at the time of service, and you will receive documentation that can be submitted to your insurer for reimbursement where eligible.

Please bring the footwear you wear most often, particularly shoes in which you would like to use your orthotics. This may include everyday shoes, work footwear, athletic shoes, safety boots or other specialized footwear. If you have a prescription, previous orthotics or relevant insurance documentation, bring those as well.

Danielle will discuss your symptoms, activities, footwear and relevant history, then assess your feet and lower-limb biomechanics. The assessment may include range-of-motion testing, gait analysis and examination of wear patterns on your footwear. If custom orthotics are appropriate, a detailed impression of your feet will be taken so the devices can be designed for your individual needs.

Yes. Custom orthotics from The Foot Smith are handcrafted in-house. Danielle oversees the process from assessment and foot impression through fabrication, finishing and final fitting. This allows greater control over materials, fit and workmanship and makes adjustments easier when required.

Custom orthotics are typically completed within 7–10 business days following your assessment. Because they are handcrafted in-house, Danielle oversees the fabrication process from foot impression through finishing and final fitting. More complex designs or unusually busy periods may occasionally require additional time.

Often, but not always. Orthotic fit depends on the shape, depth and construction of the footwear. Some orthotics can be transferred between similar shoes, while dress shoes, work boots, athletic footwear or other specialized footwear may require a different design. Bringing several commonly worn shoes to your appointment can help Danielle determine the best approach.

It can take some time for your feet and body to become accustomed to new orthotics. If you experience persistent discomfort or feel that the fit could be improved, contact The Foot Smith. Danielle will reassess the fit and make appropriate adjustments. Adjustments related to the initial fitting are provided at no additional charge for 3 months following delivery.

The lifespan of custom orthotics varies depending on use, activity level, body mechanics, footwear and the materials used. The shell of an orthotic may last considerably longer than softer top covers or cushioning materials. Periodic reassessment is recommended, particularly if your symptoms, footwear or activity level change.
